Improving Panulirus ornatus nutrition for aquaculture
Panulirus ornatus, the Ornate Rock Lobster or Tropical Rock Lobster, has been targeted for aquaculture due to its high demand and relatively fast growth. Internationally, the aquaculture of Ornate Rock Lobster predominantly relies on trash fish or other bycatch as a source of feed, an unreliable and unsustainable source of nutrition. While formulated feed exists, its use is limited in commercial settings. We aim to further develop sustainable, practical, and cost-effective feeds for this species through better understanding of nutritional requirements, raw materials, feeding behaviour and nutritional physiology. Our research is assisted by Ornatas, the first commercial-scale Tropical Rock Lobster hatchery and farm in Northern Queensland, who provide hatchery-produced juveniles for our research. We aim to facilitate industry growth through grow-out feed development with international application.
