Maia Rae Dykstra
Masters of Marine Biology Student
Maia's masters project focuses on understanding the behaviour and activities of juvenile redclaw crayfish in order to improve survival of nursery-stage animals. Juvenile mortality is a major bottleneck in the production of redclaw, and intraspecific interactions are known to play an important role. However, the prevalence of competitive interactions and cannibalistic behaviours, and their influence on mortality, are not fully understood in young animals. Maia's project will explore the activities and interactions of juvenile redclaw around the vulnerable time of moult with the goal of informing the development of targeted strategies to reduce cannibalism and competition.
